Dear all,

please find below the notes / session transcript of the 1st Education
Committee meeting 2015, held today, on Sep 2.

This is almost unedited, with three exceptions:

(1) I removed the wiki password because the mailing list archive is
publically accessible (please approach Maria, Zena or myself if it's not
available to you),

(2) I added notes on the former terminology project that I couldn't
capture during the meeting, and

(3) I clarified one name.

I'm sorry but I don't see a chance to rework the notes into proper
minutes. However, if anyone wishes to see corrections or additions (of
uncovered statements), please respond to the mailing list or let me know.

Thanks to all participants and best regards,
Frank

with ontologies, ontology evaluation

[17:17] FrankLoebe: sub-items: wiki, textbook, summerschool

[17:18] OliverKutz: website is here

[17:18] OliverKutz: http://www.polytech.univ-savoie.fr/index.php?id=3108&L=0

[17:18] FrankLoebe: ^ FOIS 2016 website

[17:22] FrankLoebe: OK: I suggest to push FOIS organizers for next steps
regarding the Summer School

[17:23] FrankLoebe: ZW: would the Summer School be run by the FOIS
organizers or would it be independent?

[17:24] FrankLoebe: FL: rather independent

[17:25] FrankLoebe: OK: although it was very useful last year to have it
closely together, and Summer School participants joinig FOIS later on
(e.g. Kit Fine)

[17:27] FrankLoebe: [action] [FL] look for name of the local contact
person or ask FOIS local organizers for it

[17:31] FrankLoebe: MK, ZW: we need more information on everything that
needs to be done (general chairing, sponsorship, "PC activity"
(selection of content/speakers), ...)

[17:32] FrankLoebe: [action] [FL] start clarification via email with
Michael Gruninger, Joao Paulo Almeida

[17:32] FrankLoebe: [summary] A decision by MK,ZW on running the summer
school shall be made after more information is available

[17:33] FrankLoebe: .
=== Wiki ===

[17:33] FrankLoebe: see http://iaoaedu.cs.uct.ac.za/

[17:34] FrankLoebe: MK: we can do the sysadmin management, content can
be added by everyone (password was shared via email earlier)

[17:34] FrankLoebe: ZW: current content was put together by MK & ZW

[17:35] [[EDIT: wiki password available on request from Maria Keet, Zena
Wood or Frank Loebe]]

[17:35] FrankLoebe: Amanda Hicks (AH) would be interested in content
management of the wiki

[17:37] FrankLoebe: AH would appreciate comments as the wiki evolves,
any additional ideas

[17:38] FrankLoebe: MK: one issue I had: books focus on different
audiences (philosophers ... computer scientists ...), I was wondering
whether we should use a semantic wiki or sth the like for
finding/classifying material

[17:43] FrankLoebe: FL: we may also work on a light-weight
ontology/classification of topics, etc. and start a semantic wiki at a
later stage

[17:43] FrankLoebe: .
=== Terminology Project ===

[17:47] MariaKeet:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?OntologySummit2007_Communique

[17:47] Amanda Hicks:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?IaoaOntologyTerminology

[17:49] FrankLoebe: < OK, FL summarized a bit of the background of the
terminology project >

[17:49] FrankLoebe: FL: focus was a bit different than terms for content
classification

[17:51] FrankLoebe: Werner Ceusters (WC) has some experience with
gathering terms and working out agreements in the context of the BFO
community

[17:53] anonymous morphed into vinay

[17:55] FrankLoebe: < FL remarks on issues with the terminology
projects, possibly to be added later >

[[EDIT: FL remarks:
* in my perception, there were some issues with the terminology project
at that time:
** difficult notions were to be covered, for which it will be hard to
find agreements (i.e., several variants may need to co-exist)
** it requires much work and was intended to be shared by multiple
people, whereas few contributed eventually
** it seemed that many were "distracted" by their day-to-day business,
whereas the terminology in itself seemed not to be sufficiently
rewarding to motivate a "critical mass" of contributors

* despite this perception on the last attempt, I still think it would be
a valuable resource to have such a terminology and thus useful to
construct one
]]

[17:56] FrankLoebe: WC: settling the/a terminology would be a major
issue for the textbook idea/project

[17:57] FrankLoebe: Sandra Lovrencic (?): perhaps we should gather a bit
more information on those intended projects, not making a decision today

[17:57] Sandra Lovrencic: yes

[17:58] FrankLoebe: WC: perhaps those of us interested in the
terminology could describe how they use certain terms and how that
differs from other uses they are aware of

[17:59] FrankLoebe: < decisions on terminology are postponed to the
next/later meetings Y>

[17:59] FrankLoebe: .
=== Textbook ===

[18:01] FrankLoebe: ZW: the idea was to outline a textbook (not so much
a handbook) in order to then find individuals for writing chapters of
the textbook

[18:01] FrankLoebe: MK: target audience and prerequisites need ot be
clarified

[18:02] FrankLoebe: MK: publishing needs clarification: cheap vs.
regular/expensive publishers, no printed publishing

[18:06] FrankLoebe: FL: my question was how to ensure coherence and
having "the same level" and possibly writing style in the textbook,
which personally I'd like much for a textbook (whereas handbooks may
have more independent chapters)

[18:07] FrankLoebe: MK: yes, e.g. terminology should be settled early
then ... with a small, core team there could be 4-5 people only

[18:08] FrankLoebe: OK: perhaps a modular approach could work, starting
with a small core written by a group, then later adding "orbiting"
chapters by others

[18:09] FrankLoebe: AH: we could start gathering our material on the
wiki, and see terminology differences in there, for instance ...

[18:11] FrankLoebe: MK: < agenda item 4. was merged in between >

[18:11] FrankLoebe: < no further business >

[18:12] FrankLoebe: .
== next meetings ==

[18:12] FrankLoebe: next meeting would then be on Oct 7

[18:13] FrankLoebe: ^[agreement]

[18:13] OliverKutz: i will be busy then

[18:13] Sandra Lovrencic: not sure yet

[18:13] MariaKeet: thank you all

[18:13] MariaKeet: bye

[18:13] FrankLoebe: .
