Abstract: Contexts in Cyc, as in other formal conceptions, are a versatile
mechanism for simplifying production and maintenance of ontology model
content. Here we identify a set of formal features of context models which
provide a conceptual solution to a current, hard systemic limit to
expansion of the global information supply: production is now bounded by
the volume of demand for inessential information, due to lack of any known
and mature method to ensure production quality (completeness and
correctness) of derivation products. We review a case in which context
mechanisms are applied in ways and at a scale that show that the conceptual
solution has a path to practical implementation.
