14th International Conference on Formal Ontology in Information Systems
(FOIS 2024)

15-19 July 2024 (Enschede, Netherlands) - 08-09 July 2024 (online)

Website: https://www.utwente.nl/en/eemcs/fois2024/
<https://www.utwente.nl/en/eemcs/fois2024/>

============================

FOIS aims to be a nexus of interdisciplinary research and communication for
researchers from many domains engaging with formal ontology. Common
application areas include conceptual modeling, database design, knowledge
engineering and management, software engineering, organizational modeling,
artificial intelligence, robotics, computational linguistics, the life
sciences, bioinformatics, and scientific research in general, geographic
information science, information retrieval, library and information
science, as well as the Semantic Web.

FOIS is the flagship conference of the International Association for
Ontology and its Applications (IAOA) <http://iaoa.org/>, a non-profit
organization promoting interdisciplinary research and international
collaboration in formal ontology.

FOIS 2024 will be held both online and in Enschede, the Netherlands,
by the Semantics,
Cybersecurity & Services group <https://www.utwente.nl/en/eemcs/scs/> of
the University of Twente.

Call for Early Career Symposium

Submission deadline: 15 March 2024 29 March 2024

Webpage:
https://www.utwente.nl/en/eemcs/fois2024/calls/early-career-symposium/

============================

The Early Career Symposium offers a platform for students and early career
researchers to present their work and gain insights from experienced
researchers. This symposium enables participants to discuss their research
directions, ideas, methods, and (possibly) results. It also provides an
opportunity for guidance on various aspects of the participants’
professional and academic life, and facilitates networking within the
formal ontology and information systems’ research community.

The symposium covers the same topics of interest as the main conference and
is primarily directed at Ph.D. students. However, it is also open to M.Sc.
and Eng.D. students, as well as recent Ph.D. graduates.

Format

The ECS will be held on-site during the FOIS conference and will include:

   -

   Mentoring Lunch: ECS participants will be paired with senior researchers
   who will offer feedback on their work and provide academic or professional
   advice.
   -

   Fast-Talk Session: Participants will have the opportunity to advertise
   their work in a 5-minute speech to the conference’s main track general
   audience.
   -

   Poster Session: A traditional format where participants can display and
   discuss their research in more detail.

The ECS offers a unique opportunity for the next generation of FOIS
researchers to network and advance their careers. Additionally, we plan to
organize an optional, informal dinner for ECS participants and students
during the conference. Details regarding participation will be provided
during the registration process.

Important dates

   -

   Submission deadline: 15 March 2024 29 March 2024
   -

   Notification of acceptance: 15 April 2024

Call for Journal-first

Paper submission: 17 April 2024

Webpage: https://www.utwente.nl/en/eemcs/fois2024/calls/journal-first/
<https://www.utwente.nl/en/eemcs/fois2024/calls/journal-first/>

============================

The FOIS 2024 journal-first track provides a forum to discuss recent
published research on topics related to formal ontology for broader
dissemination within the FOIS community. The track invites submissions of
extended abstracts of papers that have appeared or have been accepted for
publication in journals, but have not been previously presented at FOIS or
any other applied ontology-focused conference, including ICBO, ISWC, ESWC,
K-CAP, and all JOWO workshops.

Copyright permitting, accepted abstracts to the track (or shortened
versions) will be published in the conference proceedings for FOIS
satellite events within the IAOA series at CEUR-WS
<https://ceur-ws.org/iaoa.html>. In addition, they will be presented during
the conference (either on-site or online). Accepted papers to the track
will be linked to the conference website.

At least one author of each accepted abstract is required to register for
the conference to present the work (on-site or online).

Expected contributions

For the journal-first track, we solicit submissions that meet the following
criteria:

   -

   - They relate to the topics of the FOIS conference (see FOIS 2024's call
   for papers <https://www.utwente.nl/en/eemcs/fois2024/calls/>).
   -

   - They are not extensions of an earlier conference or workshop paper.
   -

   - They must have been published in a journal in 2021 or later.
   -

   - They are research articles, but not review articles or commentaries.
   -

   Submissions that are in press can be submitted as long as the final
   camera-ready version is available.

Important dates

   -

   Paper submission: 17 April 2024
   -

   Author notification: 15 May 2024

============================

Call for Ontology Showcase

Paper submission: 17 April 2024

Webpage: https://www.utwente.nl/en/eemcs/fois2024/calls/showcase/

============================

The Ontology Showcase at FOIS gives authors the opportunity to increase the
impact of their work, get early feedback from the community on ongoing
work, and promote the sharing and the reuse of curated high-quality
ontologies.

Differentiation from the Main Track

The ontology showcase is a practical track aimed at stimulating the
community to share their ontologies, make them more visible, and get
(early) feedback, even if their development is still an ongoing or early
work that does not provide a mature scientific contribution suitable to be
submitted (yet) to the main track.

Important dates

Paper submission: 17 April 2024

Notification of acceptance: 15 May 2024

Author registration: 03 June 2024

Online conference: 08-09 July 2024

Onsite conference (Enschede): 15-19

============================

Call for Demonstrations

Submissions due: 17 April 2024

Website:
https://www.utwente.nl/en/eemcs/fois2024/calls/demos/#definition-and-scope

============================

The demonstration track complements FOIS 2024 full-length paper main tracks
by offering an interactive platform for authors to present and discuss
their work. We invite demonstrations of tools and methods developed using
ontologies, as well as those to create, maintain, integrate, publish,
evaluate, and implement ontologies. We also invite demonstrations of novel
ontology (anti)patterns and of challenges arising in the ontology
engineering life cycle. The goal is to raise the visibility and foster
understanding of the dynamic, integrative, and use-oriented aspects of
applied ontology, its tools, and its uses.

We encourage the demonstrations of software tools, patterns, methods, and
languages reported in papers accepted for the main tracks. For example, a
novel ontology engineering method proposed in a full-length paper in the
Application and Methods track can be complemented by demonstrating the
method.

Important dates

Submissions due: 17 April 2024

Notifications of acceptance: 15 May 2024

Onsite Conference: 15-19 July 2024

Online conference: 08-09 July 2024

Camera-ready versions due: 30 July 2024

============================

Call for Research and Industrial Project Exhibition

Paper submission: 29 April 2024

Website: https://www.utwente.nl/en/eemcs/fois2024/calls/project-exhibitions/

============================

FOIS 2024's Research and Industrial Project Exhibition invites researchers
and practitioners to present their perspectives, ongoing, or recently
finished projects (e.g., H2020, ERC, national grants) involving in some
form the area of Formal Ontology in Information Systems. The primary goal
is to provide a platform for disseminating interim project results and
receiving feedback on evolving research proposals. This event fosters
collaboration by facilitating connections between potential research
partners, nurturing existing relationships, and encouraging discourse on
innovative research ideas. Participants gain insights into ongoing research
developments and opportunities to network with potential collaborators.

We also welcome submissions from other tracks of FOIS 2024 to present their
broader project context within the Project Exhibitions track, offering an
opportunity to showcase how these submissions fit into the context of
larger projects.

Projects should:

   -

   address important challenges in Formal Ontology or utilise Formal
   Ontology methods;
   -

   be either research or innovation projects;
   -

   be currently ongoing, scheduled to begin, or in the planning phase;
   -

   aim, within a specified timeframe and led by a team or consortium, to
   tackle a challenge set by an organisation or funding entity.
