The 43rd meeting of IAOA Education Committee was held today Wednesday, 6
November 2019.
There was no formal agenda. We reviewed the agenda and notes from last
month's meeting (below).
In attendance:
Kenneth Baclawski
Sandra Lovrencic
Stefan Schultz
Todd Schneider
Below are notes from today's meeting.
Further below is the chat transcript from the 9 October 2019 meeting.
*[10:15] **ToddSchneider:* Kenneth needs the raw text from the current Education wiki.
*[10:15] **ToddSchneider:* Ask Maria to sent this to Kenneth.
*[10:16] **ToddSchneider:* What should the style (i.e., look and feel) be for the new pages?
*[10:26] **Ken Baclawski:* To migrate to the new wiki, I need the raw wikitext. A zip file with all of the wiki pages would be the best for me.
*[10:30] **ToddSchneider:* Todd will send a request to Maria to send her wiki material (i.e., raw text) to Kenneth.
*[10:31] **ToddSchneider:* Discussed 'monitoring' Wikipedia pages related to ontology; First need a list of pages that should be monitored.
*[10:36] **ToddSchneider:* Every one should review the Wikipedia pageshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ontology_(information_science) andhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Applied_ontology
*[10:41] **Ken Baclawski:* Each wiki page has a discussion associated with it. Editing a page or a discussion requires one to login and to have appropriate permission.
*[10:45] **ToddSchneider:* Send an email to Frank and Laura about ISAO 2020 to ask what needs to be done.
*[10:46] **ToddSchneider:* Stefan will be able to participate in ISAO 2020; He can give tutorials similar to those provided during at Cape Town meeting.
*[10:47] **ToddSchneider:* Next meeting will be 4 December 2019 same time.
*[10:49] **Ken Baclawski:* Semantic MediaWiki has the ability to specify categories (roughly equivalent to a class in an ontology). The only instances in Semantic MediaWiki are wiki pages. So the instances of a category are pages. Categories can be organized into a hierarchy. There are also properties which can have values that are pages or data values. If the terms of the Term List are to be categories, what are the instances?
*[10:50] **ToddSchneider:* Meeting ended at 10:50 EST/

=== 2b. input and ideas from EduTC session ===
(rough) FL notes during the EduTC Session at JOWO 2019:
* discussion about a workshop at next JOWO, focusing on education (?)
* start 'term of the month' blog posts at IAOA website,
increasing visibility of EduTC wiki content and stabilizing
progress of work on the term list
* on term entry pages, include links to relevant Stanford
Encyclopedia of Philosophy (SEP) pages
* further wiki pages of interest:
** list of ontology tools
** list of ontology repositories (of ontologies may be too much)
** making old versions of ontologies available persistently
*[10:10] **ToddSchneider:* 10:01] Zena: Hi Frank - I cannot stat the Skype call since it keeps telling me it is an internal threat. Would you be able to start it please?
[10:03] anonymous morphed into LaureVieu
[10:05] Zena1: 0b. Relation between EduC and other Sigs that other educational interests
[10:06] FrankLoebe: < session starts >
[10:08] FrankLoebe: KB: SWAO SIG, in particular Todd Schneider and Mike Bennett have expressed interest to contribute to EduC projects, in particular to the term list project
[10:10] FrankLoebe: TS: one issue with the term list may be to check whether the term coverage - also for "Semantic Web people" - is appropriate
[10:11] FrankLoebe: TS: another point of interest is to provide guides/manuals on (or more generally promote the use of) Common Logic
[10:11] ToddSchneider:http://purl.org/goodod/guideline
[10:12] FrankLoebe: TS: (in analogy to OWL guidelines/material)
[10:13] FrankLoebe: TS: developing new material may not be feasible, but providing pointers to existing resources would help already
[10:16] FrankLoebe: LV: just a few comments: Common Logic (CL) is also harder to learn; on the other hand, there is plenty of material on first-order logic that could be used ... perhaps that could be linked with CL training
[10:17] LaureVieu: ^This is not what I said
[10:18] FrankLoebe: FL: then I'm sorry ... to be corected afterwards
[10:18] LaureVieu: CL is more expressive but not necessarily harder to learn
[10:19] LaureVieu: (OWL is hard to learn in large part due to its limited expressivity)
[10:19] FrankLoebe: TS: not for Common Logic per se, in general it would be good to collect material on CL (and maybe other languages); from the SWAO-perspective, more material for practitioners would be desirable
[10:19] Zena1: 4. EduTC Wiki & IAOA Wiki
a. Semantic Media Wiki for IAOA and sub groups
b. moving content from the EduTC Wiki into the IAOA Wiki?
[10:21] FrankLoebe: ^ < on item 0b.: ACTION: [TS] < to be covered after the meeting > >
[10:21] FrankLoebe: IAOA Wiki:https://wiki.iaoa.org/
[10:22] FrankLoebe: ZW: Is there a new IAOA Administrator now?
[10:23] FrankLoebe: LV: Selja Seppl will be administrating the IAOA wiki, but this still needs to get started. Nevertheless the EduTC could get started with first pages.
[10:25] FrankLoebe: KB: I can grant people accounts for the Wiki
[10:25] FrankLoebe: KB: The EduTC can also decide for an 'individual' skin, cf
https://wiki.iaoa.org/index.php/SWAO
[10:26] FrankLoebe: < discussion on Trac, already installed by KB, LV and KB will coordinate on that further >
[10:32] FrankLoebe: FL: regarding the wiki, getting accounts should be rather easy
I see two points to clarify:
* Skin and structure for the pages listing resources & material
* a conception for how to organize the term list contents
[10:34] FrankLoebe: ACTION: [ZW] think of some ideas (by the end of next week) and distribute those through [iaoa-education] and then possibly have a separate meeting for that
[10:34] Zena1: 1. ISAO series & ISAO 2020
a. core content & past speakers: requirements for ISAOs
b. next steps in communication with ISAO 2020 chairs
[10:37] FrankLoebe: ACTION: [ZW] add the core content document to the OneDrive folder by Oct 09 (afternoon)
[10:40] FrankLoebe: ACTION: [FL] add to the Past-ISAO-Overview document information on ISAO in 2014 in Brazil
[10:44] FrankLoebe: LV: Would you mind if previous speakers are among the facilitators, e.g., Nicola Guarino (last in 2014?) or Stefan Schulz (last in 201?
[10:45] Zena1: 2. JOWO 2019 report & following up
a. general report from participants [FL,TS,LV]
b. input and ideas from EduTC session
c. relation to other IAOA SIGs (AOIS, SWAO)
d. follow-up actions
[10:46] FrankLoebe: ^ < item 1. >
FL: from my point of view, NG would cover quite well core content for an ISAO; SSch was speaking on biomedical ontology I think, which is less central - insofar he could participate again, but need not, in my personal opinion
[10:47] Zena1: LV: Education Committee event at JOWO was run at the same time as three other events which lowered attendance
[10:47] Zena1: FL: We had 3 others in the room
[10:48] FrankLoebe: ^ < item 1.>
LV: Would you mind if the Chairs are given talks?
FL: I don't see a problem with that (e.g., Ontology Matching would quite fit)
[10:48] Zena1: LV: We had more outreach during the general meeting
[10:48] Zena1: TS: Pub quiz was also well attended
[10:49] FrankLoebe: ^ < item 1. >
ZW: it's fine as long as there are also other speakers, but this should be the case
LV: ok, thanks, ... I think we can then start to contact first speakers, incl. Ariana Betti, perhaps for a short session at the end of ISAO
[10:50] Zena1: <Discussion of JOWO>
[10:51] FrankLoebe: TS, LV: JOWO was a bit more like a mini-conference (with many presentations), rather than workshops with intense discussions
[10:52] Zena1: c. relation to other IAOA SIGs (AOIS, SWAO) should be added to next meeting
[10:54] FrankLoebe: FL: before I need to leave, I've added some notes from the EduC-session discussion at JOWO to the pre-meeting material
[10:55] ToddSchneider: Should the Education Committee 'resources' be integrated with the IAOA 'Resources'?
[10:57] Zena1: FL: We should keep an eye on this when we integrate EduC committee pages
[10:58] Zena1: TS: Let;s defer Term of the month until integration
[10:58] Zena1: 3. ontology-related pages on Wikipedia [TS]
[10:59] Zena1: TS: I sent an email regarding what is represented on wikipedia with regards to Ontology.
[10:59] Zena1: TS: There seems to be some errors on wikipedia and content that needs curating.
[11:00] Zena1: LV: We had a panel in Bolzano 2016 ISAO that brought this up and the need for a group that would curate all the pages that relate to Ontology
[11:00] Zena1: LV: I do not think anything happened with regards to IAOA
[11:01] Zena1: TS: An example we were looking at was knowledge graphs
[11:03] Zena1: TS: We could have a blog topic looking at one term in wikipedia.
[11:04] Zena1: ACTION: ZW draft email to ask Education Committee who would like to blog about a Wikipedia ontology related entry
[11:04] Zena1: 5. AOB
[11:06] Zena1: LV: We need to discuss with the communication committee where we would have the blog entry with regards to the wikipedia discussion.
[11:07] Zena1: LV: The blog page itself needs reorganising - please let us know if you have any suggestions
[11:08] Zena1: LV: ACTION to talk to the communication committee
[11:08] Zena1: TS: The blog page looks more like an events page
[11:13] Zena1: 6. next meetings & revision of default time?
[11:14] Zena1: 6th November
[11:15] Zena1: 10:00 EST / 14:00 BST / 13:00 CEST
[11:15] Zena1: 10:00 EST / 14:00 BST / 15:00 CEST
[11:18] ToddSchneider: Meeting ended @11:16 EDT
