From mkeet at cs.uct.ac.za Mon Dec 3 09:14:24 2018 From: mkeet at cs.uct.ac.za (Maria Keet) Date: Mon, 3 Dec 2018 10:14:24 +0200 Subject: [iaoa-education] Contributions to IAOA Edu Comm Wiki - report In-Reply-To: <1700333540.1355595.1542325906490@mail.yahoo.com> References: <1700333540.1355595.1542325906490@mail.yahoo.com> Message-ID: Hi Rob, thank you for the input. a few responses to some of your questions and suggestions: There is indeed an inconsistency in representation, and we're aware of that. Some time earlier in the year, we decided on a format among several options (see [1]), but also that, in the interest of time, we would first try to fill it with content first and only if time permitted before ISAO'18, to fix the formatting of those entries that predated the formatting decision. We ran out of time, so harmonising the formatting of the earlier entries is still on the to-do list. That said, when one adds something now, it would be good to use that formatting style already. On another note, I don't think that copying-and-pasting definitions from a plain dictionary is useful. they're more colloquial and the simplification may not be right and there are multiple dictionaries with different definitions. e.g., why mirriam webster but not, say, the oxford dictionary? you do raise a point on scope. I think it is Applied Ontology. This also means that listing reference models is not the way to go: there are several ontology repositories that do a good job at that, and I don't think we should replicate that (in casu, I removed CIDOC from the term list). Some terms are informally used interchangeably in the literature (even if they may not be so upon closer inspection by one philosopher or ontologist), and even considered synonyms (by another philosopher or ontologist). E.g., endurant and continuant (though if you align dolce:endurant with bfo:continuant, you'll get an logical inconsistency), individual, particular, instance, and entity, and stuff, matter, mass, and substance. Most [do/plan to/should] have pointers to each other. [1] the sandbox entry for that is http://iaoaedu.cs.uct.ac.za/pmwiki.php?n=IAOAEdu.Continuant and we decided on the first layout/formatting variant.
